Copper is becoming a systems constraint, not just a commodity issue

Global copper demand is projected to rise from 28 million metric tons in 2025 to 42 million by 2040, with a potential 10 million metric ton shortfall. That gap is starting to show up in how data centers are planned, built, and operated. Our recent roundtable session did not suggest that operators are facing uniform crisis conditions today. It did demonstrate that copper has moved into the category of issues that can shape architecture, project phasing, equipment choice, security posture, and maintenance strategy.

The likely near-term effect is not a single dramatic failure mode. It is a combination of higher cost, longer lead times, more substitution pressure, more theft exposure, and more need for disciplined engineering and material control. That is enough to justify treating copper as a strategic operations topic now, before tighter conditions force rushed decisions.
